South Coogee, ahoy!

by on March 20, 2010

I’m part of the team heading to Sydney’s smallest parish, South Coogee. Perched on the hills in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, squeezed between Coogee and Maroubra, the parish of South Coogee has a unique demographic makeup. There’s a chunk of military housing, a stretch of Department of Housing flats and houses, and then on the other side of Malabar Road, massive gated mansions worth millions of dollars. There is no main community focal point in the parish, no hub of local shops. Although it’s close to the local public school, St Paul’s South Coogee is right in the middle of residential housing, and is not even on the main road.

So we have our work cut out for us!

We’re hoping to make contact with lots of people over the next week, especially those in the Department of Housing flats, and we want to strengthen the relationships St Paul’s has with parents and children at the local school. We’ll also be visiting a nearby retirement home, helping out with a big community fun fair, chatting to people at special women’s and men’s events and encouraging the saints at the weekly church services. It’s going to be a busy but exciting week as we proclaim the name of Jesus to people in this challenging suburb!
