Thinking differently about church

by on March 27, 2011

How do you feel about church? Where do you stand on whether it is for the Christian or the non-Christian? What would you think if there was no singing? What about if someone interrupted the preacher to ask a question or make a comment?

Enter: The Cottage. This congregation of St. Stephens meets on Sunday afternoons. There’s no singing, no liturgy, and it is ultra-casual. There’s a sermon, but it’s more like a big discussion group. Lots of my boxes about church were broken today, and I like that. After all, we need to be on about loving people and letting the negotiable things be negotiable, right?

Pray for wisdom as The Cottage Church people keep connecting with their neighbours and as they move forward in a new place. Praise God for their ingenuity and willingness to love people in the messiness of their lives.

Tomorrow morning (7.30am!) we are going to be hanging out at a number of parks in Newtown/Camperdown/Erskineville chatting to people and inviting them to a Jazz evening this weekend. Please pray that God would cause the right people to come across our path and that we’d be bold in approaching people with the great great news of our Saviour!
